This 3-hour workshop focuses on relevant legal and ethical issues that impact clinicians as they practice with a focus on the use of telepsychology in the United States. Telepsychology is an often-used mode of service delivery in the US, especially since 2020. In this workshop we will begin with a general discussion of ethical and legal issues and the intersection with telehealth but then will predominantly focus on specific areas of ethical and legal concern including confidentiality and boundary violations. Theoretical, empirical and practical concerns of different aspects of these professional issues will be presented and discussed with participants with a particular focus on how psychologists have managed changes due to a virtual environment in an ethical manner consistent within the regulatory framework.

Note: This workshop focuses on legal and ethical issues for clinicians in the US though it may be applicable to others. It does not emphasize any particular model, e.g., systems-centered training & therapy (SCT).

Presentation Content

There are many similarities in the ethics involved in practicing psychology between live in-person practice and telepsychology, however there are some differences as well. With the increased use of telepsychology, it is important to specifically address how ethical and legal concerns interact within this mode of treatment. In the areas of both confidentiality and boundary violations the kinds of ethical dilemmas may seem to be of less concern within telepsychology, however, it may be that the manifestation of these dilemmas is different and potentially as or even more harmful to clients.

Presenters

Carol Webb PhD
Dr. Carol Webb is a clinical psychologist who received her PhD in psychology from the University of Delaware in 1981 and has been licensed to practice in Georgia since 1982. She was on the faculty of Emory University School of Medicine from 1981-2014 and was the Director of the APA-accredited doctoral internship in psychology at Emory/Grady from 1984-2014. She also had a private practice with Peachtree Psychological Associates where she offered psychotherapy and evaluation services to children, adolescents, adults and couples with a specialty in the area of helping families in transition primarily due to separation and divorce.

Dr. Webb was on the Georgia State Board of Examiners of Psychologists from 2002-2012 and was chair of the Board from 2003-2006. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) from 2007-2013 and was President in 2012. She joined the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) as its Chief Operating Officer in January of 2014 and retired from that position at the end of 2018. She continued to provide consultation services to Delta Airlines from 1996-2026. She is now retired.
