Event Details
Dr. Carol Webb, PhD, ABPP
This 3-hour workshop focuses on how the death, illness, or retirement of a therapist impacts the client as well as the therapist, and offers some suggestions about ways to cope with this event. Any rupture of the therapeutic relationship has consequences, whether it is temporary or permanent, planned or unplanned. These consequences will be examined for in-person therapy as well as for telepsychology with both clinical and ethical/regulatory emphases. Since the pandemic began, the use of telepsychology has dramatically increased, and has continued to expand into all areas of the practice of psychology. However, there is scant literature that addresses the implications of the termination of therapy due to the therapist’s absence for telepsychology.
Note: This workshop focuses on ethical decision-making for psychologists in the US though it may be applicable to others. It does not emphasize any particular model, e.g., systems-centered training & therapy (SCT).

Learning Objectives
- Describe the clinical and ethical issues related to death, illness or retirement of a therapist
- Discuss how the death, illness, or retirement of a therapist is managed when using telehealth
- Create a responsible plan for one's practice in the event of a treatment termination due to therapist absence
Presentation Content
The issue of termination of treatment due to therapist absence is one that received considerable attention a number of years ago, particularly within the psychoanalytic/psychodynamic orientations. Recently, however, more attention has been paid to this issue from both the impact on the client and the impact on the therapist. Additionally, while the clinical impact is the most frequent target for discussion, currently there are also ethical and regulatory issues that are addressed. In this workshop both the clinical and the ethical/regulatory impact will be discussed as it applies both to the client and to the therapist. Therapist absence can be due to a number of situations, both planned and unplanned and the differences between these situations will also be addressed. Finally, this workshop will address how these issues are managed within telepsychology. Participants will be encouraged to develop a plan for their practice if and/or when such events occur.
